Not that happy with the color scheme; one problem is that each time it changes, I have to alter the hex numbers individually. Please treat the purple-blue as stone house, the light grey as stone wall and the black as area not revealed by the lantern light. |
The bear shakes itself to its feet, and Embla is very surprised when it stands up, because she can now see that it has TWO HEADS.
The bear will roll a 4 for initiative. Embla, please roll a d6.

[so much for talk with animals ^^]
I roll a 2.
Assuming my previous move to have become mooted, I advance one hex and begin to cast Dust Devil.
Now that Engelhart has seen it ...
The beast is truly obscure; there are no moral or symbolic qualities that you can identify, because it belongs to a culture that is hardly understood at all. Many common folk don't believe that culture even exists, but those who have a higher knowledge know there are sightings from time to time.
The beast is associated with the svirfneblin, a race of deep gnomes, said to be the ancestors of gnomes, and not easily encountered. It is told, in stories, that the beast is a pet or a watchdog. It is also told that the horns, ground down, are capable of producing a powder that enables transcendence, though you're not sure how that is defined factually.
From other abilities, if the beast hits with its front paws, it will maul an opponent, with a great chance of killing. It has four attacks per round. It is armor class 5. It weighs about 3,500 lbs and may have eight, nine or ten hit dice.
As Engelhart watches it climb to its feet, it is crystal clear that it is going to attack Embla with all it has.
Rob,
You get a druidic sense for such things that this particular beast would respond to the spell. Because it is twinned with its own biological self, and not the amalgam of other unnatural creatures, it ought to respond as an animal would.
I advance to 0212 and throw a dart. I believe it to be 9 hexes, so medium range:
D20: 10 - 1 = 9
D3: 3
That...did not go as desired
When it is my turn, I move to 511.
Technically, you can't take an action, Engelhart, as I have initiative, regarding Embla's die. For future reference, you might want to take note of your ability to detect what a beast is about to do, when fighting these creatures, before declaring any casting. That will occasionally save you from ruining a spell, as well as knowing you're safe to cast one because it is going to rip Embla to shreds, and not you.
Embla, what is your AC now? Same question for the rest of the party (as it keeps changing and I want to confirm).
I am AC 8.
My AC is 7.
AC is 8
[Would the spell allow me an amicable conversation with the animal even though we are currently in an open conflict with it?]
[AC 8]
My AC is 4. I noted, much too late, that the beast had Initiative. Mooted again, as Embla is clearly going to need help.
[Uhm, Alexis, I apologize for skipping a bit all over, I'm at work and I'm not parsing all that I should, I'll be off in a bit]
[Okay. I know everyone is excited. But you lost initiative. In future, please WAIT to see who wins initiative before describing what actions you take. No one has moved yet and Mikael's dart has NOT been drawn or thrown ~ so the die roll is exempt.
[Patience, all. Patience]
The beast advances and I attack Embla with two bites and two claws.
I hit AC 7 with the second bite attack, for 15 points of damage. Embla happily avoids being hit by both claws, but is tagged by one and knocked in 0713, two hexes for her shown position. This second attack causes 5 more damage.
Embla is stunned and bleeding, 1 hp per round.
NOW the players may take their moves. All moves stated prior to this must be RESTATED, as all previous comments are void.
[It's okay, Engelhart; I'll correct as necessary]
[Would the spell allow me an amicable conversation with the animal even though we are currently in an open conflict with it?]
The spell states as much; but it will be broken if you or others attack the beast AFTER the spell has been discharged. There will be an opportunity to shout at others to stand down once you get the spell cast and then discharged on the creature.
Engelhart, at this moment, you know that the beast is going to run headlong into the party and attack it ~ the specifics beyond that are not known to you, but you're at the front.
[I have to remember to fill Engelhart's skill in before stating that the party can take action. In future, wait in combat for me to say, go ahead. Note above, the only thing I asked for was for Embla to roll a d6; no one else should have done anything until that was done and judged]
Embla, I forgot to check for incidental damage. But you didn't take any.
[I'm going to take half an hour for lunch; I'm worn out getting the image of the bear photoshopped. Wasn't easy]
[Okay, should I cast "Speak with animals" and try to reason it then (maybe offer some food), or do you guys think you can put it down?]
That thing would murder me.
Mikael moves to 0412. That takes all his actions.
Technically, Rob, there's no time to discuss it. If you wait for an answer, I'm going to count your movement this round as passed.
[fair enough. I spend my round discussing then.]
[I'm back]
I drop my waterskins to achieve 4 AP, then say to Rob, "You wanna talk? Talk."
I rush to 0712. Need to buy time for Embla to gather herself, and my AC is fair.
Is that your move, Lothar?
That's my move.
The next post is up.
