The Rain Lets Up

The rain continues to pour until midnight, but the wind begins to slack off after six p.m. on the 2nd.  A slow, light rain continues the rest of the night, so that early risers see that Stavanger is still being pelted with rain as they rise around 6 to 7 in the morning.  At 9 o'clock there are still moments when it drops a little rain in fits and stops, something that is still going on by noon.

The weather has warmed somewhat, however, so that it is no longer chilly but merely brisk, warm enough that you can go outside without feeling cold straight through.  Of all of you, the half-orc feels this a little worse than the others, having grown up in a warmer clime.  The wind is only a gentle breeze out of the west.

Engelhart can find a maul for 29 s.p.  It weighs 8 lbs.  Lead bullets are available from the blacksmith, at 6 s.p. each.

It is a Tuesday.

Engelhart, would you mind casting Cure on me?

Ok, now that it's not going to hurt to go out I want to see about getting some better armor for Bergthora, Valda and Fjall. I believe they are in leather at the moment. What kind of armors are they able to wear? At the very least I'd like to get them all studded leather, or possibly chain if they'd want to wear it.

Alexis Smolensk said...

They can wear whatever you can buy.

I'm almost back up to fighting shape myself, and given the nice weather, I'd like to spend it looking for that squire.

My Wisdom is a mere 11, but I have a 50% increased chance to find hirelings, so not too shabby I think.

Someone strong enough to lug my pack around and smart enough to load a heavy crossbow.

I'll also pay for another day at the Inn while I think of it.

Alexis Smolensk said...

If you want to count this as your day to do that, Pandred, please go ahead and roll your wisdom. Are you looking for a boy or a girl, a human, gnome or a halfling. There are plenty of the latter two races around, as they have homelands in Norway. Also, how old are you searching for? Does it matter if they're religious?

Lothar Svensson said...

I head to the armorer. If Embla wishes, I can see about picking up some armor for her archers while I'm out as well.

Embla Strand said...

Lothar, that'd be lovely. They have leather right now, but they could do with some studded leather.

Are there any restrictions on helmet use? If not, would you snag me 3 iron helmets?

Alexis, what is the utility of wearing gauntlets?

Engelhart Askjellson said...

Now that rest has me topped-up in health, I too head for the markets to upgrade my gear.

Lothar: I'll have one leather armour too many shortly, please account for that (no idea how Alexis handles armour sizing, if at all).

I drop by Embla's dwelling place, gifting her with a casting of Cure Light Wounds for +6 points. You're weaker than I remember, Embla, it'll take at least another one of these to get you bent back into shape.

Embla Strand said...

Yeah, I was down to 1hp in the fight. Thank you!

Pandred said...

Damn. Well, I won't lie, I didn't have much beyond those two prior points in mind.

Wisdom roll: 6

I would prefer an able-bodied male.
Religion should be same as the party, but anything not actively opposed is acceptable.
Age-wise, I'll accept either a young adult human, or an adult gnome/halfling.
The only criteria is that they must be able to carry 40 lbs and maintain 4AP.

Guantlets add to pummelling damage: http://tao-of-dnd.wikispaces.com/Pummeling"

I don't handle armor sizing at all, right now, but I did bring that up with Lothar in the last post. It's a future thing, however.

Pandred, you find a 25 y.o. male halfling (rolling race randomly), Howell Oddsdraken, with 5 hit points, no combat experience, a confirmed Lutheran, 37 inches tall, 76 lbs. with a 15 strength, able to carry up to 44 lbs. at -2 AP, 73 lbs. maximum. He has a morale of 9.

Will do?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Sorry, Engelhart. Just assume the armor fits whoever you give it to (it will be made to fit with what's there, whether that is logical or not).

Pandred said...

Hmm. My own strength must be skewing how much I think is reasonable to carry.

How much would he expect in wages? Does he have any skills whatsoever? Cooking, swimming, or whathaveyou?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Well, he can make food, but no, he has no skills. His father was a laborer and he subtracts 1 hit point per day from wilderness damage (tough).

Pandred said...

Alright.

If he's willing to carry my things, cook when I leave him at camp, and can learn to load that crossbow, I'm good with Howell.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'm imagining a 3'1" halfling loading a heavy crossbow. But I think he'd figure it out, so long as he doesn't have to fire it.

[added a small version with 2.22 mile-hexes. See the post above]

Map looks rad as hell.

Anyone think we could cut some travel time by getting a raft or something? We still never checked out that trail near the hill. I don't know if that's near the site of the attacks or not.

Just to clarify, though I intend to sign him on, do we have a value for Howell's wages? Your quote for a young child was low enough that I was tempted to field an army of them, but I imagine Howell won't take a child's pay just because he's small.

Lothar Svensson said...

Not having heard anything yet about a limit on available armor, I purchase 5 suits of studded leather, three small (fir and iron) shields and 6 iron helmets, two suits and three helmets go to Embla and her archers, the remaining three suits, shields and helms given to Bergthora, Valda and Fjall.

If I am jumping the gun, I apologize. There has been some discussion since I (rather obliquely, admittedly) asked about availability so I am assuming that there isn't an issue with supply.

If there is time after dropping off the armor to go to the cobbler I intend to go there next.

Pandred said...

I'm sorry, I mentioned I had a spare suit of Studded available earlier, and can't recall if or where we landed on things like resizing.

So someone can have that, if they like.

Similarly, if there's any time for me to buy today, I'd like to see about my own armor. It was pure foolishness not to ask Lothar to grab something on my behalf.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'm having trouble staying focused. I missed the question on HOW MANY things were available at the market. Let's say there's enough of any type of armor for ten people.

Armor size: I have three options:

1) Everyone's armor has to be individually made, requiring time for fitting, design, making and personalization, meaning that you will get your armor in four weeks.

2) Armor can only be exchanged between persons of the same race ~ except that not all humans, elves, dwarves and so on are the same size either, with some humans being the same size as some elves, so therefore it should be sized according to height and weight, which brings us back to point (1).

3) Ignore all armor sizing and presume that game armor can be mixed and matched as necessary by anyone prepared to pull the thongs out of armor that is too big or add to armor that is too small from the scraps collected from other people's armor. This is easiest, requires the least amount of detailing and ~ though not logical ~ ignores a fruitless quest for simulation which, in fact, from personal experience, adds absolutely nothing to the game.

I thought I had made it clear that we're going with option (3). Are we good with that?

Alexis Smolensk said...

For the general party. The day is spitting a little rain, otherwise it is brisk and comfortable. Please Just Buy Stuff, without feeling the need to announce that you're "going to buy." Just buy it and let's get this market stuff over with.

If you're resting, say so, then don't buy at the market.

Embla Strand said...

Would a helmet provide CLO? If so, would it more resemble a cloth cap (.02), a cloth hat (.05), or a fur hat (.12)?

Pandred said...

Alright, seems clear enough.

How many days of rest are we thinking, team? I'm 4 hp away from full, and I can work with that. Engelhart wanted to get Embla one more Cure, so that's one more day unless he does it on the road.

Is there anything else we want to do while we're here, or are we voting on where to strike out?

Engelhart Askjellson said...

I'll leave the last leg of healing up to Embla. It's her character on the line, after all.

Alexis: There seems to be a formatting error on the market tables starting at the two-thirds of the page down (maybe it's just me?).

The AC values for Studded Leather, Ringmail and Scalemail are not listed in the market entries. There are also some comparable armour options where there is one that costs more and weighs more, providing no discernible advantage vs. the other (e.g. splinted vs. banded). Deliberate?

The Maul seems entirely too cheap since all other weapons cost gp, is the cost in sp an oversight?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Embla, we've established that armor does not provide CLO.

I'll generate a new market page, Engelhart. I don't have access to the computer to do that just now, but I will in an hour.

You can find information on armor on the wiki.

The maul has no metal in it. It is made of hardwood with leather laced over the ends of the "hammer." That is why it is cheap.

Engelhart Askjellson said...

My own trip to the market:

Hauberk & chausses combo: 27 sp
Wooden Maul: 29 sp
Banded Mail Armour: 242 gp

I'll still have some coin left, to pitch in on provisions once that time comes around and, maybe, make a small gift to my family.

Now, Alexis, can I use an additional leather thong as a harness of any sort to strap the Maul on my person? Or is it too hefty? I have no clear idea of its dimensions other than "big".

How many bullets did Gudbrand have? I never declared that I retrieved any of those I fired on account of thinking them mere stones...

Alexis Smolensk said...

Engelhart,

Do check your encumbrance after you're suited up.

I'm not sure how many bullets he had either. I'm going to have to count them as stones. Otherwise, they're still on the floor of the barrow.

The maul has a five foot handle, but you can make a loop with a thong, tie it into a belt over your shoulder and hang the maul from your back. It won't be easy to get off, but that is why it costs 3 AP to do so.

Pandred said...

I didn't notice this before, but you've got a listing for Plate Mail in the shop, but apparently there is also a Plate Armor on the wiki page, seperate from Mail.

What's the difference, and how much am I about to pay to have AC 1 with a shield?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Plate armor does indeed give an armor class of AC 1 with shield. However, it is impractical for actually fighting. I haven't worked out a price for it because it is strictly show armor: for pomp and ceremony. It can also be used for jousting, because it is one rush and no fighting.

Pandred said...

Damn.

Alright.

Purchased:
Howell
Plate Armor
Chausses
Hauberk
Helmet, Iron

Still some cash left over for food, haven't decided, but I'll drum something up over the course of the evening.

Embla Strand said...

I should be fine to do stuff after Engelhart Cures me tomorrow, and I'd like to make one final trip to the jeweler's to convert some of the coin I'm carrying into something lighter. I'll take care of that tomorrow, but then I am set to go out and about.
