A Patrol Wanders Along

You can see a group of bright blue frog-men moving towards you, carrying spears.  In keeping with the party's message (and Engelhart's encouragement to let them pass), I'm depicting them just now before the climb over the log in the middle of the trail.

There is a small chance that they will see you as they approach.  I'm discounting armor and weapons, but giving -3 for the forest and a bonus of -5 to the stealth distance on account of your cover.  That put you at -8 overall.

At the moment, they definitely don't see you, though they are clearly patrolling the path, checking left and right as they move along.

UPDATE:  From the lack of comments below, I'm going to assume now that the players have no intention of changing their positions or taking any other actions until the froglings (good, we'll call them that) get a lot closer.  Therefore, I'll post another image, hoping to get a response.

On the right, you'll see that the frogs have dropped into single file as they cross the log.  The lead frog moves up to 0507 [I'm sorry, some of these numbers are difficult to read, I'll see what I can do for the next image] and stops.  It turns, sniffs the air, and looks directly at the rock edge at 0707, which you'll remember is 7 feet high from the creature's perspective.  It is quite evident at that point, particularly to Embla, who is flat on her belly and looking straight at the creature, that the party's presence is, at the very least, firmly suspected.  The frogling leader looks back at its companions and raises an arm.

It is the player's move at that point; act, do nothing, let me know.

Oh and PLEASE, people, Read the Comments of Your Fellow Players when picking targets and entering hexes!!!

(My internet surprised me yesterday by being dead, so I'll be more or less MIA until Tuesday. I'll make an effort, but in my present circumstance that still means about one post a day if I'm lucky. So, that's just super.)

With Oddsdrakken loading my crossbow, and the knowledge that that will take some time...

I'll get my throwing axe ready.

No further action from me until the frogs cross the log.

I stay put.

I'm thinking that, even if they chance upon us, we'll still notice it in time to loose our opening salvo.

No use in trying to wade in their direction until we've got the definite advantage, our APs counts of 3 and 4 won't allow us to close on them in time to cut them off or to engage them and attack in the same round.

In fact, with the forest being mostly difficult terrain, I'm pretty sure that we'd be better served by feigning retreat after our initial discharge and let them come to us.

After all, we're only progressing 2 hexes per turn unless we break into a run.

I agree. Let's wait and feint to the south if we are spotted.

I load and ready my bow for firing next round. (4 AP)

I have updated the post above. Read from the update below and let me know your intentions.

Lothar Svensson said...

From my position, do I have a clear shot at any of them?

Alexis Smolensk said...

If Lothar stands up (which you'll have to do anyway, if you intend to use a bow), you have a clear shot at all of them from 0807. From your present position, you can hit the one standing on the log. The one behind it is obscured and all the ones ahead are blocked by the five feet of ledge ahead of you.

Lothar Svensson said...

I loose my arrow then (previously drawn as mentioned above) at the frogling standing on the log, hex 0504.

I'll wait for confirmation before rolling as I'm not sure it was acknowledged that I had drawn the arrow last round.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'm reading: "Ready your bow" as your nocking an arrow. Go ahead and fire.

Lothar Svensson said...

Attack roll: 12

Damage roll: 8

By my reckoning that's one more round of loading after this one for me to launch my first shot with the Crossbow.

I'll stand for 2AP and give out a mighty ululation, thrusting my handaxe skyward!

"Come get some!"

One hopes AC 3 is enough to taunt with impugnity.

Lothar Svensson said...

Not all of us have AC 3, you know...

Pandred said...

Yeah, but they were already gonna shoot back at -you-!

I'm just tipping the odds in our favor.

(Hehe, my first instinct was to stay down and try to hide our numbers.)

While you were chatting with Embla, before seeing any of these creatures, Oddsdraken had been doing what he could to ready your crossbow (he is small and it is a heavy crossbow, so he can't actually load it all the way. He can manage the first two rounds, though. Sorry about that; shouldn't have picked a halfling).

In any case, your crossbow is ready to fire, Pandred, if you'd rather do that rather than the dramatic action you picked.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Is Lothar 2nd level? I think Lothar is 2nd level.

Lothar Svensson said...

Yes, Lothar is second level.

Embla Strand said...

Petar and I will hold.

Pandred said...

Oh really?! Hell yeah!

Pretty sure I still have to stand though, so I'll have to save the blasting for next round.

To reiterate, I accept the crossbow from Oddsdrakken, rising to face our froggy foes. The handaxe will be passed to Odds.

Engelhart Askjellson said...

On hold, but remember that these guys can jump up to meet you all with ease...

Alexis Smolensk said...

Embla,

I'll have to overrule that decision. The party is already exposed by Lothar's shot; Petar will want to fire, as he may not get another chance to fire. Remember that what Engelhart points out is true. One round and Petar may find himself face to face with a frogling.

So please roll a d20 for the follower.

Pandred, roll to hit.

Embla Strand said...

I roll a 4 for Petar.

Pandred said...

Blasting the Frog in 0503

To-Hit: 14

Damage: 8

(The to-hit is unmodified, I wasn't sure if I got my +1 Strength bonus to-hit on missile attacks. I also have a +1 vs male humanoids. I have no idea how I'd sense the froggy maleness but through pheromones.)

Lothar Svensson said...

Do we have Engelhart's Bless active?

Engelhart Askjellson said...

You ought to...

Alexis Smolensk said...

[I'm stronger this week, but still mostly wrecked in the evenings. We'll do a little at a time until I get in shape for this occupation; once again, I'm beginning to lose weight like crazy]

Yes, there is a bless in effect. Yes, Pandred hits. Pandred, that should be 2d6+1 damage for the crossbow and no damage from strength for missile weapons, ever. Is that +1 to hit vs male humanoids or +1 damage? Yes, of course you can tell they're male (when they are): they swagger, the bloody bastards!

Shame about Petar.

Embla, you should also roll for Willa.

Is the party going to do more than release missile weapons this round? If you can tell me so, we can move on (and I'll try to get up another post tomorrow night).

Pandred said...

Damage roll was 2d6+1, got an 8 total.

Question was actually about applying the Strength on To-Hit rolls, not damage. I knew not to apply it to damage from missile weapons.

The bonus from background is to-hit, but upon rereading it says "Humans and Demi-Humans". Would that include frogmen and the like, or is it limited to basically Player-Races in effect?

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'm sure I've explained this before.

Strength applies only to hand-to-hand combat. It contributes nothing to hurled or fired weapons, though some background results may increase or decrease range.

Dexterity modifies hurled or fired weapons only, adjusting them to hit and never to damage: 16 dex +1 to hit; 17 dex +2 to hit; 18 dex +3 to hit. A less than 7 dex applies negative modifiers to hurled or fired weapons.

Embla Strand said...

That's a natural 20 for Willa. If she's still OK, she will stand up, and aim her bow at the frog on the log as well.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Sorry, can't remember if she's using a long bow or a short bow. Please roll damage and double it: 1d6 if a short bow and 1d8 if a long bow.

Embla Strand said...

Shortbow: 2 doubled is 4 damage.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Okay, we have a new post up. The froglings take their turn. I have moved Embla to account for Willa's attack.
