New Characters

I assume the dead players are reading this, so hopefully we can start to deal with two things.

First, could you please list the things on your character that will be found above ground, so that Lothar (and probably Engelhart also) can pick and choose what they want.

Second, please keep your characters up and available, as what is on your bodies may be important if anyone returns to the barrow.

Third and most important, if you wish to keep playing, here is what I will need from you.

  • Roll 4d6 six times and record the sum of the highest three dice, just as before.

Here are your minimum stat totals:

  • If you do not have a roll that is at least 16, discard all six rolls and try again.
  • If your highest roll is a 16, but none of the other rolls are at least 15, then discard all six rolls and try again.
  • If your highest roll is a 17, but none of the other rolls are at least a 14, then discard all six rolls and try again.
  • If your highest roll is an 18, then you must keep the numbers you've generated, no matter what they are.

When you've managed one of the successful arrangements above, decide your class, your gender and your race, putting the numbers you've generated into whatever stat you prefer.

Feel free to talk about your results before making a decision.

If you do not wish to continue running in the world, please indicate it.  There may be others who'd like to give it a try.

Alrighty, was waiting for this post.

Character name: Pandred, Female Human Fighter

Strength: 18 (26 on percentile, if that's something I roll)
Intelligence: 11
Wisdom: 12
Constitution: 14
Dexterity: 14
Charisma: 13

I'd love to have tried the Druid again, especially since being able to find more Cairns and the like sounds really radical, but without at least a 15 in Charisma and Wisdom I just don't think it's worth it.

I think having a straight smash-em-up fighter is something that would work well with our surviving party.

I need to head to work for a few hours here, but unless another party member has a very strong suggestion, (I.E Hold up there, my stats are a million times better, I could handle that role more easily, so you do something more magey) this will be my final pick.

Wooo! Juvenis Party round two!

This question will be related to my choice of character and class, but what Tech Level is Rogaland?

If we were to face opponents in this region, what weapons and arms are they most likely to bear, and are mounted forces common?

I'm thinking here specifically in terms of what sort of proficiencies we'll want to take as a group.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The percentile roll is fine, Pandred. I'm going to work on some stuff for awhile, but I'll get a background set up for you soon.

Thanks for being a fighter, Rowan. I agree that we do need one, and your stats are better than mine.

I'm torn in a couple of directions for my next character's class. I feel like we could benefit both from another caster-y thing (mage, illusionist, or druid), but we could also use some scouts (either a Ranger, Assassin, or Thief). I could always be a bard, too!

Thoughts? I'd love some input.

Danielle Osterman said...

Actually, I don't qualify for the Ranger, so that's off of the table.

Maxwell, what are you thinking about?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Can we see your raw stats, Dani?

Danielle Osterman said...

Oh yeah. Duh.

I've a:

16
15
14
12
12 and
11

All of Gudbrand's stuff is on his body.

And here's a list of what's in Alexandra's backpack (by the ruined farmstead):

torch(es)(5)
flint (1) - lying by the hole
thieves pick(1)
fishook(2)
dress(1)
dice(2)
copper coins(21)
club(1)
cigars(6)
chemise(1)
bearskin(1)

Everything is on Rowan's corpse as well.

Maxwell Joslyn said...

I threw the following, so I am set:

14, 7, 14, 17, 14, 14.

Until now I was thinking "fighter." You can't have too many of them, so I don't feel phased that Arduin is going to play one. On the other hand, 17 is the magic number to play a paladin!

I'm going to bed. Will think about it. What do you guys think?

Danielle Osterman said...

I support both paths. That said, paladins can be handy.

Wanting to keep things moving, I'll take another assassin.

Meet Embla Strand, half-orc Assassin

Str 15
Dex 12
Con 16
Int 14
Wis 12
Cha 11

Pandred said...

I always get tempted to play a Paladin, but I fetishise that sweet influx of troops at 9th level to play non-standard fighter. Lay-on-hands sounds pretty radical though.

I trust your judgement here.

Lothar Svensson said...

Assassin, Cleric, Fighter, Ranger. I think Paladin would make a goodly addition, and you've got the 17... Don't squander it like some idiot did. Of course, I also think it might be nice to have a Mage around as well. Though if we manage to survive long enough to get to 5th, one of us can take on a Mage or Illusionist as a henchman. My two cents.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Embla = female, I'm guessing. I'll have to roll your background again if I'm wrong.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'm going to wait for confirmation of Embla's Gender before posting any content.

Danielle Osterman said...

Yes. Sorry about leaving that out.

Alexis Smolensk said...

A post for Embla Strand is up. You can find her generated background on the drive.

Embla Strand said...

Thank you, Alexis.

I have a lot of money leftover (150+gp). Does anybody need anything?

I've already picked up a spade and hatchet to aid in our investigation of the barrow. Can anyone think of anything else that might be useful (or that their character needs)?

Lothar Svensson said...

Some actual rope would be good, and I know some sappers we could hire. Also tents.

Embla Strand said...

I've got 50ft of rope. Tents are tricky - an 8x8 tent will fit probably 2-3 of us and weighs 15lbs. A tent that'll house all of us (30x30) is very expensive and very weighty (almost 100lbs). I can get a second tent, but I'd appreciate it if someone else would carry it.

Anything else?

Embla Strand said...

OK. I get a bonus study (single category within a field) from any other class. I'm torn between a few of options, and I'd appreciate some input.

Medicine - helps us heal faster and mediates some of the harm caused by significant injuries. No one else can use this skill (at least not until Englehart gets a new field, which will be a while). This is always useful, albeit in a limited capacity.

Logistics - helps us get and maintain equipment for less money, interact with work animals, and I become a better sentry. This will help us operate for longer farther from civilization. But it's also a Fighter skill, so Maxwell could take it now (and receive the benefits from all of the other studies in the same field) or Pandred could take it whenever she gains access to a new field.

Concealment - lets me hide by standing still. This helps me scout better and potentially gives us more control over how we initiate combats (as well as further enabling my assassinating and backstabbing tendencies). While this directly benefits the group the least, it is also the only study not available to any party member.

Thoughts? Other ideas?

Regarding the reassessment of Mercenary pay, what would be the revised expectation for my three sapper friends? I think we should seriously consider hiring at least one (or all three if we can afford it) when we go back to the barrow. They ought to be able to get us through the reinforced floor of the ruined farmhouse. Also we ought to pay some serious attention to our food supplies. I can hunt or fish to supplement, but I don't think I'll be able to sustain a group of any size for an extended time at my current skill level. By way of example, fishing on a strict average I'll be able to pull 8 lbs of fish per 10 hour day.

Embla, I think I'm leaning towards Logistics if Maxwell doesn't take it for this reason. If he does, perhaps Beasts from the cleric list? We're down a druid, so having a handle on some of the more esoteric beasties we might encounter could also be helpful.

Maxwell Joslyn said...

Hey guys, I've decided I'm not going to keep playing. I really want to, but I'm soon to get even busier than before and I don't think I'll be able to give a proper amount of attention to the game.

Lothar Svensson said...

Dang, man. That's too bad. We'll be sorry to see you go.

Embla Strand said...

I'm sad to read it, Maxwell. We'll miss you.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Lothar, regarding sappers and mercenaries.

Treat your sappers as the table under Mercenary Hirelings lists them, with those weapons and that armor, plus that price. Please ignore the character generator regarding these things going forward.

Alexis Smolensk said...

For the moment, until the next post is up, please may I ask that Lothar and Engelhart do not know Embla and Pandred ~ I don't mind the advice that's gone across so far, but I'd like it if Lothar nor Engelhart give advice to the other two AT THIS TIME. They haven't met yet.

Danielle Osterman said...

Do Pandred and I know each other?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Yes, I'm going to play it that Embla is Pandred's much older friend.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Just in case, I'll put it here too. The next post is up.
